Tonight I answered a call from an unknown number, which I NEVER do, because I thought it might be someone calling to confirm my shift to "text for Hillary" at a local call center tomorrow night. Instead, it was someone calling me to ask for another donation to Hillary's campaign, which is being triple matched by some donor (or organization, I don't remember). She asked for $200 and she was so shocked when I said yes. It was kind of funny. Poor woman then had to read to me all these federally mandated statements, including one that required her to list all 50 states. She definitely earned that donation.

I mailed my ballot yesterday. I mailed my ballot 2 weeks ago, but when I received another one in the mail a week after, I realized I must have filled out and mailed someone else's. Oops. I had to call the county election commission and ask them what to do and they said it would be fine if I just filled out the one with my name on it -- the other one won't count because my signature isn't going to match the name that shows up when they scan the barcode.  I really hope they send out a new ballot to that person.

I've been busy. And sick. And then busy some more. So I haven't done much more than post screencaps and read some fanfiction (and comment, too!) and catch up with a few people whose posts come into my inbox. I hope everyone is doing well.

Some trivia for those of you who watch MARVEL's Agents of SHIELD - one of the extras in the last episode (the one in this picture holding the safety glasses) is an old friend from college, whom I've mentioned before. I've seen him in small roles in a few TV shows and he is fine, but he is an amazing stage actor. His name's Dan Donohue -- if you ever have a chance to see him on stage, do it.

I was going to do that 100 days of happiness meme, but I had to acknowledge I don't have the discipline for that. Instead, I'll just post some things that have made me happy recently. :D

The Debate. I don't think that anything Donald does will change the minds of his supporters, but I was still pleased to see how well Hillary kept her cool and how she needled Donald. Yes, I do wish both candidates would have focused more on their policies (does Donald have them?) rather than attacking each other, but I think there were some things that Hillary had to address. Now I am waiting to hear how Donald is going to weasel out of the next two debates.

Well, that's not really true, because there is a lot of great TV being made right now and I can't keep up with it. But I thought I'd give some new shows a try and in most cases gave up after one episode. Maybe these are going to get better, but I don't really have the patience to wait and see.

Of Kings and Prophets (cancelled after two episodes, no surprise there)
Supergirl
Houdini and Doyle
Lucifer
Blindspot
Quantico
Heroes Reborn (I actually watched 5 eps before giving up)
The Bastard Executioner (cancelled, again, no surprise)
The Magicians
The Aliens

Haven't watched yet, but plan to:
Sense8
Damien (I've seen bad reviews which makes me very unhappy because, well, BRADLEY!)
The Expanse
Hap and Leonard (I love the books)

New shows I'd recommend:
Limitless (tonally all over the place, but at times hilarious)
Life in Pieces (family comedies are not my thing, but this is really good)
Colony -- okay, I don't really *recommend* it, but it isn't terrible. Bonus Kim Rhodes!
The Man in the High Castle -- just two episodes in, but I like it. Bonus Rick Worthy & DJ Qualls!

Shows cancelled that I am bummed about:
The Awesomes (NOOOOOOOOO!)
The Good Wife -- but even though I am really sorry to see this end, sometimes it is good for shows to quit while they are ahead.

Still haven't gotten through my pictures from Vegas, but here is a pic of two of the most fabulous women in the universe. I am just bummed because in so many of my photos, one of them is blurred or out of focus. They need to stand still!

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season and that there is a wonderful new year awaiting you!

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal, [livejournal.com profile] felisblanco, [livejournal.com profile] sillie82, [livejournal.com profile] dizzojay, [livejournal.com profile] cherry619, and [livejournal.com profile] digitalwave for the cards and to [livejournal.com profile] fireheart13 for my virtual gift.

I have two New Year's resolutions. One is to do at least one social thing a week because I am spending too much time at home on my computer. I have a head start this week because I have two friends in town that I am seeing today and tomorrow and this Friday I'll be going with a friend to see Timothy Odmundson at SF Sketchfest. Woot!

My other resolution is to read more published fiction. This didn't start well because just three days into the new year I started and then gave up on two books. The Director by David Ignatius started out interesting, but I gave up halfway through when it became a lot more pedestrian and I didn't believe in the characters. Louisa Meets Bear is a book of interconnected short stories, but I didn't like the first one that much and was put off by the second one being written in second person. However, today I started Whiskey Tango Foxtrot by David Shafer and laughed out loud three times in the first two pages. A good sign!

I am still reading fan fiction, though, and here are two recs of stories I read during my vacation, plus more news ... under the cut

This is a great show, and I think this is the best episode yet.

Posted my first newsletter at [livejournal.com profile] mxa_news and it was a doozy! Took a while to compile that one.

I am writing letters to [livejournal.com profile] sillie82, [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal, [livejournal.com profile] wings128 and [livejournal.com profile] topaz119. One more slot if anyone else wants a letter.

I have made much progress on the art for four stories. I have an idea for an animation for one of them but am not sure I can pull it off. I'd like to get some input on the idea, but because it is for an spn_j2_bb, I'd like to move the conversation to PM. Let me know in the comments if you're open to having me contact you about this.

I have an artist's check-in in a few days for the fifth story I am doing and that one I am still pondering.

Brief TV update:
A friend and I watch certain shows together and yesterday we saw the last four episodes of the most current season of House of Cards. I am gobsmacked. Not quite as traumatic as the end of Game of Thrones, though. Next, we are planning to watch Wayward Pines and Wolf Hall.

New guilty pleasure: The Astronaut Wives Club.

Shows I am so happy to see return: Graceland, Teen Wolf, Suits

I am trying to better balance my fanfic reading with book reading, though my book reading choices are pretty light- weight so far. Some recent reads, all of which I enjoyed thoroughly:

Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick
The Royal We by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan
Golden Son by Pierce Brown

What are you reading?

But Madam Secretary is pretty damn good.
