I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season and that there is a wonderful new year awaiting you!

Many thanks to [ profile] milly_gal, [ profile] felisblanco, [ profile] sillie82, [ profile] dizzojay, [ profile] cherry619, and [ profile] digitalwave for the cards and to [ profile] fireheart13 for my virtual gift.

I have two New Year's resolutions. One is to do at least one social thing a week because I am spending too much time at home on my computer. I have a head start this week because I have two friends in town that I am seeing today and tomorrow and this Friday I'll be going with a friend to see Timothy Odmundson at SF Sketchfest. Woot!

My other resolution is to read more published fiction. This didn't start well because just three days into the new year I started and then gave up on two books. The Director by David Ignatius started out interesting, but I gave up halfway through when it became a lot more pedestrian and I didn't believe in the characters. Louisa Meets Bear is a book of interconnected short stories, but I didn't like the first one that much and was put off by the second one being written in second person. However, today I started Whiskey Tango Foxtrot by David Shafer and laughed out loud three times in the first two pages. A good sign!

I am still reading fan fiction, though, and here are two recs of stories I read during my vacation, plus more news ... under the cut

Fandom: Merlin
Title: In Love With My Radio series
Author: lunchee
Rating: PG-13
Pairings: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 33,118
Summary: The AU where Arthur is a radio DJ and Merlin is the drunk guy from the bar who threw a drink on him. And then there was love! And lots of unhelpful friends.
My thoughts: Has entered my top ten Merlin fics list. So funny that I had to stop halfway through to comment about how freakin' brilliant it was.

Fandom: Merlin
Title: More Than Just a Game
Author: Ivalee
Rating: PG-13
Pairings: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 21,922
Summary: AU. When Merlin started his job as game designer at DragonVision, he was excited to join the team creating an RPG about the legends of King Arthur. Soon he was even dreaming about scenes from the legend, even if those were not part of the game. Or at least they weren't planned to be, but on each day after Merlin had a dream, scenes he programmed at work changed, resembling his dreams now. Instead of biting Merlin's head off, though, his creative director, Arthur, supported and encouraged him, even when Merlin's game scenes began to create a love story between the Once and Future King and his warlock.
My thoughts: An original idea, wonderfully executed.

Title: Recall this Message
Author: writeonclara
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 3558
Summary: AU. apendragon says, i just told merlin emrys that i want to bend him over my desk so i need to get pissed
gwainegreene says, on it
For the kink meme prompt: In a flurry of snarky emails to co-worker Merlin Emrys, Arthur Pendragon composes and accidentally hits SEND on one with his true thoughts about what he'd like to do with him.
My thoughts: Poor Arthur, he is such a doofus. Very cute and fun.

Title: He Who Writes My Story
Author: [ profile] kelleigh
Rating: R
Pairings: Jensen Ackles/Jared Padalecki.
Words: 13,700
Summary: AU. After his last book flops and he breaks up with his boyfriend, Jensen moves back to his hometown of Brookgreen, California, to start over. His plans to take a break from writing (and dating!) veer off-course, however, when Jensen’s best friend introduces him to Jared, the new deputy sheriff in town, who immediately reignites Jensen's creativity along with his desire. Now it's up to Jensen to decide which he wants more: a successful book or a relationship with the man of his dreams.
My thoughts: Jared is the best kind of inspiration. A really well-written, enjoyable story.

Title: Anti-kink: Sex Tape
Author: [ profile] ash_carpenter
Rating: NC-17
Pairings: Sam/Dean
Words: ~3,700
Summary: Sam and Dean make a sex tape! They're not as good at it as Dean seems to think.
My thoughts: I hadn't been all that interested in reading the [ profile] ash_carpenter's anti-kink stories, but the summary made me laugh so I thought I'd give it a try. Now I have to go read all the rest of them because this was brilliant. So, so funny.

What’s Done Is Never Done by [ profile] brutti_ma_buoni AO3
art by [ profile] cassiopeia7
Rating NC17
Pairings Jared/Jensen, brief Jared/OMC
Words 24500
Warnings Plenty of contract killings, not all offscreen
Summary Jensen's work isn't something most people would own to, or admire. He has his reasons, but he also has his reasons for hiding and lying. About everything. Unfortunately, his work is also dangerous enough that Jared, his neighbour and occasional hook-up, is accidentally embroiled and at risk. Jensen has to confess those lies, flee, which means road tripping with Jared and trying to keep them together despite Jared's very justifiable anger, confront his own murky past, make sure Jared gets out alive, and find a way to live with himself. Even after Jensen admits to himself just how much he wishes his life had taken a different path.
My comment on AO3: What do they call page-turners when you are no longer turning pages, but tapping your finger on your Kindle? A finger-tapper? A finger-flipper? Anyway, whatever it ends up being called, this story is one. It completely sucked me in. I liked all of it: the story, the characterizations, the dialogue, the pacing -- but what I appreciated most is that you revealed Jensen's past through the telling of the story, not by front-loading a lot of backstory. Very well done.

Number Six by [ profile] paper_storm88 AO3
Word Count: 34 200
Fandom: Supernatural RPF
Pairing: Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles
Other RP Characters: Sherri Padalecki, Gerry Padalecki, Jeff Padalecki, Megan Padalecki, Josh Ackles, Alan Ackles, Alexis Bledel, Michael Weatherly, Eric Kripke, Sandra McCoy
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: graphic sex, sickly sweet schmoop
Summary: The story of the five times Jared and Jensen said goodbye, and the one time they didn't.
My feels: If you are in the mood for a sweet, lovely, emotionally satisfying story with lots sex, this is it.

Wake by [ profile] minchout AO3
Artist name: [ profile] chickcheney
Genre: wincest
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Rating: R
Word count: ~20,300
Warnings: minor scenes of a character cutting himself
Summary: Gadreel has had Sam for four years, and Dean, lost in guilt and obsessed with finding a way to get his brother back, has isolated himself in a cabin in the Missouri Ozarks with nothing but the woods, a stray dog, some chickens, and all the books the Men of Letters had to offer to keep him company. Then Sam shows up one day without his passenger, and Dean learns quickly that it doesn't matter that Sam is with him again - there is still a lot of work to be done before they can find their way back to each other.
My feels: Everything about it felt true and right and it was beautifully structured and well-written. A very affecting story with and ending that leaves you wanting more.

Fic recs

matchboximpala_dw: (jensen pig)
This is a long, long overdue list of just some of the fic I have read recently that I really enjoyed -- some quite old, some new. I hope you find something you like.

SPN and J2

In the Hearts of Honest Men by [ profile] wraith816 (at AO3)
Pairing: Dean/Sam
Words: 549
Summary: Dean gives thanks; Sam is less than impressed.
My comments: FUNNY banter between the boys, characterizations are dead-on.

Like a Detuned Radio by [ profile] homo_pink
Pairing: J2, AU
Words: 9000
Warning: mute character, permanent injury (past/off-screen)
Summary: When Jared's released from prison, Jensen is there to help him cope. Parole officer/ex-con AU.
My comments: Just beautifully crafted, with spare, evocative prose. Emotional, humorous, erotic.

Glittering Prizes And Endless Compromises by [ profile] rockstarpeach (at AO3)
Pairing: J2, AU
Words: 47242
Summary: Jared's in love with Jensen. The only problem is, Jensen's a hooker and Jared can't really afford him. It's a good thing he's so darn cute, because despite Jared's meagre finances, they strike up a business relationship that was only ever an excuse to become more than that. They're head over heels for each other, so it should be their happily ever after, right? Turns out it's harder than Jared expected, having a hooker for a boyfriend. Jensen on the other hand, saw this coming.
My comments: It was refreshing to read a hooker!fic that wasn't about the hooker needing to be saved. Jensen owns what he is doing and isn't apologetic about it. It is Jared who needs to come to terms with it. I thought the story was very well crafted, romantic, and at times, quite hot.

Ivy and Amaranth by [ profile] xthursdaynextx (Thursday_next at AO3)
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 41886
Summary: While clearing out Morgana’s old rooms, Merlin discovers a pair of unusual magical bracelets. Arthur wants to destroy them, of course, and so begins a quest that will take them over snowy mountains and through rain-soaked forests, dealing with Druids, bandits and inns of questionable repute. With the future of magic itself hanging in the balance and matters complicated by the changing nature of their relationship, Merlin discovers that destiny comes at a price.
My comments:This is one of the bemagic reveal stories I have read. I thought it was handled beautifully and the characterizations were excellent.

Blue Christmas by [ profile] slantedknitting (SlantedKnitting at AO3)
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 6178
Summary: Arthur's alone on Christmas for the first time in his life and he almost can't cope until Merlin steps in to quietly take Arthur home to Ealdor for the holiday. Modern AU.
My comments: So much about this fic is charming, but nothing so much as Hunith's treatment of Arthur and his reaction to her attention. So sweet.

Everyday by [ profile] phantomjam
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 1,200
Warnings: None. Errs on the sappy-sweet side.
Summary: Arthur has an entire catalogue of ways to kiss Merlin.
My comments: I want to see all of these kisses.

The Devil is in the Details by lolo313 (at AO3)
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 996
Summary: "Arthur Pendragon had always prided himself on his attention to detail." Basically, Arthur notices a freckle on Merlin's thigh during fellatio.
My comments: Beautifully written.

M-RYS by [ profile] ot_mornmeril (mornmeril at AO3) ART by [ profile] kjneely
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Words: 123216
Summary: The year is 2355 and Arthur Pendragon is the darling of Albion's capitol, Camelot. He's rich, handsome and the heir to Pendragon Enterprises, the world market leader of technology. Of course behind the facade, Arthur's life is far from perfect. His father is a demanding man and the betrayal of his ex-girlfriend has left him with even more issues than before, while through it all he's doing his best to take care of his mentally ill sister. But things really start to escalate when Arthur is put in charge of launching a new series of android models, the M-RYS line, and he discovers a malfunctioning model that seems more like a human than a computer. Things only go downhill from there. Between struggling with his ever growing feelings for Merlin and discovering one strange thing after the other, Arthur's world is completely upended as he and Merlin embark on a mission to discover his father's secrets.
My comments: One of my top pics of the year. The author is a gifted writer, who has done an excellent job of integrating the necessary world-building into the story. The plot was well-crafted and though I had an idea of how the story might end, there were plenty of surprises along the way.

Weighty and Troublesome Things by skitz_phenom on AO3
Pairing: Gwen/Arthur; Arthur/Merlin
Words: 123285
Summary:Post-canon AU / Canon AU from S2. It's been ten years since Arthur drifted away from him on the Lake of Avalon, but even inside Camelot's walls, Merlin is still lost. Hiding from those who know him and cut off from his former life in self-imposed exile, he can't resist the temptation when a mysterious stranger offers him the chance to set things right. Merlin returns to the past, to an innocent, simpler time, armed with the knowledge of Arthur's fate. He knows the odds (and the stubborn people - Arthur in particular) are stacked against him and the obstacles he must overcome seem insurmountable. Can destiny be nudged enough to save Arthur's life, and is the price too high?
My comments: Another beautifully written story, where Merlin repeatedly manipulates events to change Arthur's fate. The author does a great job with pacing, dialogue, and plotting -- all the story choices made seemed completely logical. It is emotional and lovely and at times heart-wrenching.

I don't even know sometimes how I find these older stories -- someone else must have rec'd this. Thank you to whomever did because THIS IS FREAKING HILARIOUS.

The Grocery Store Conveyor Belt Thing by [AO3 account] scioscribe
Summary: They're out of rock salt, lighter fluid, and Twizzlers; Sam really hates going shopping with Dean.

I would give anything to see this actually played out on the show. Priceless.
matchboximpala_dw: (Dean's sad face)
Considering that The Doors of Time and The Puzzle (That is Me) are two of my all-time favorite fanfics, I cannot believe it has taken me almost a year to get around to reading [ profile] felisblanco's Gunpoint. Granted, I have been pretty distracted by the Merlin fandom and though I've been tracking all my favorite SPN writers and bookmarking or downloading their fic, I'm way behind in my reading.

I also have to admit I was a little scared by the summary. It sounded like a tough story: "Jensen got his childhood stolen away from him when he was ten years old. Along with his memory, his voice and every emotion that wasn’t fear, hatred or anger. Question is, can Jared help him get any of it back? And more importantly, does Jensen really want him to?" The warnings -- though honest -- were even worse. Because I have loved absolutely everything [ profile] felisblanco has written, I knew I would love this, but I had to be in the right frame of mind to start it.

Apparently yesterday I was. I started reading yesterday afternoon, read straight through until late last night, read before getting ready for work this morning, and finished it tonight as soon as I got home. I am saving the timestamp* as a reward to myself for writing something about it more substantial than, "hey, it was great!"

Nothing in my life or the lives of anyone I am close to comes close to the experiences Jensen has in this story, so I cannot pretend to know if what she writes is an accurate portrayal of how he might react. All I can say is that it feels true. Jared, too, with his eighteen-year-old naive optimism in the face of the obvious challenges inherent in a relationship with Jensen also feels true. I believed in every step (forward and back) in their developing relationship. I believed in the people that surrounded Jared and Jensen, in the stresses and the challenges of their lives, in the victories, both large and small, they had over these challenges. That's all I really ask of a writer, that he or she make me believe. (Okay, I also ask that he or she make me believe while writing complete and grammatically correct sentences, but I never have to worrry about that with felis.)

I was deeply moved while reading it and reflecting on it now is causing me to well up again. But don't let the emotional impact deter you. There are many moments of real humor (hey, Chad's in it!) and many, many moments of pretty hot sex. As usual, with her work, you get the whole package.

A shout-out must go out to [ profile] winchestergirl, who created many pieces of lovely (and sometimes frightening) art, which are an integral part of the story. The art is incorporated into the story at AO3, but can also be found in a separate art post.

If it isn't clear by now, I strongly encourage you to read this story, if you haven't already.

*I have the timestamp saved on my computer, but cannot find it at [ profile] felis_fic or her ao3 account. So maybe she can comment and let you know where it is?

Merlin (TV)
Explicit M/M

When Merlin meets Arthur Pendragon he is mesmerised and can hardly believe it when he finds out that he's a highclass prostitute. Thinking it's the only way to see the intriguing prat again, Merlin becomes Arthur's client - and embarks on a journey on which he not only loses his virginity (in any way possible) but also his heart. But while Merlin thinks he has found a friend – maybe even love - Arthur doesn't allow himself such things and keeps reminding Merlin that all they have is a business arrangement.

Last night I read Putting the Fün Back in Dysfünctional by [ profile] greenthumb421 and I am here to rec it HARD. An interesting case fic that serves primarily as a framework for the author to explore the dynamic between the two brothers. And to give them something to banter about. It was really well-written, hilarious and charming, and the characterizations of the boys were great. It will be a while before I forget Sammy's face having Braxton-Hicks contractions or Dean cheating on the Impala with the Mustang.

Putting the  Fün Back in Dysfünctional           PDF
Author: greenthumb421
Artist: annartism
Summary: Laughing used to come easy to the Winchester boys. Sometimes Sam thinks they'll never really laugh again.
Sam n' Dean, worn down by Bobby's death, Sam's hallucinations of Lucifer, lack of sleep, and the (temporary) loss of the Impala, decide to take a week or two off from hunting, rest up, and try to have some fun, see if they can remember how to laugh. The old Reilly 'House of Death' case in Pittsburgh, PA, seems like a nice, non-urgent case to chew over while they kick back and catch up on sleep. Unfortunately, the hyena demons infesting the house have other ideas.

Characters: Dean, Sam, Sheriff Jody Mills and OMC's.
Pairings: Gen. No, really! Okay, some if-you-squint slashiness, but no worse than canon.
Disclaimer: No profit, no glory, just borrowing the boys from Kripke and the CW.
Rating: PG-13 for language, violence
Word Count: approx 33,000
Warnings: Spoilers through 7.12 Time After Time. Language. (Seriously, gratuitous overuse of the F-bomb.) Criminal misuse of the Pittsburghese dialect, the Ethiopian Christian Church, italics (and parentheses), Trojan condoms, and stuffed cats (but not together, ewwww). And epically long run-on sentences.

1. I watched How to Train Your Dragon a few nights ago and LOVED it. It may have been because the entire time I was translating Hiccup = Jared and Toothless = Jensen and it made me love the characters even more.

2. Did I mention that I had a 3 1/2 hour long phone conversation with a friend who returned to Haiti with Random Acts this year and my instincts to not travel with that group again were confirmed? The trip sounded great -- more challenging, better organized and led, and Colin Ferguson was apparently the coolest person ever. The fangirl craziness continued, though. :( I'll go back again like I did last November, but not with RA -- unless they can somehow screen for crazies.

3. Here's a gif I made from Friday the 13th:

Unfreakingbelievably brilliant.

Fair Game | Foul Play by qblackheart
Written for: [info]spn_cinema
Movie Prompt: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Pairing: Jensen/Jared
Rating: NC-17
Word count: 67,000

Author, upon thinking that Bertie Bott was a diabolical genius. Jensen
Ackles and Jared Padalecki – and the rest of the world probably, both
Muggle and Magical, given time and thoughtful reflection – would likely
concur. Because life isn’t fair, is it? It’s full of foul people and
foul things always mucking up your best laid plans for success and
survival. And don’t even get me started on love, mate! Because suddenly
you have all these, Merlin forbid,
feelings, sneaking up on you
when you least expect it, knocking you about and getting you addicted
before love shatters you, ruining you for anyone else. But if you don’t
risk life and limb for it, then what’s the use in living? Where’s the
fairness in that? Quidditch, on the other hand? That’s fair (barely)
because there are rules and regulations (technically) and clear winners
and losers (you catch the snitch, you win; easy-peasy, right?) and one
bloke doesn’t suddenly rise from the dead and try to take it all over
just to win the World Bloody Cup! Voldemort; let’s just blame everything
on him, the stupid foul git. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll
just help myself to another one of these beans… Blimey. Bubotuber Pus.
Or perhaps, Petrol. So not fair, but I’m a glutton for this sort of
punishment… Oh! Roly-Poly Pudding! Yum! Hmm. Maybe fair is what you make
of it, and I s’pose that’s the moral of this story. One more for the
road? Ah. Troll Bogey. Should’ve quit while I was ahead.

The Lengths That I Would Go To by [ profile] insertcode11
Summary: Jensen is the Greek god Apollo in modern day America, perhaps not-so-secretly yearning for the kind of love emulated in the art that he patrons. Jared is a young matchmaker cursed to see soul mates but never find his own. Against all odds (but maybe with a little push by fate), they meet and fall in love.

Holy FC, this is an amazing story.

matchboximpala_dw: (Default)
I admit I haven't finished it yet, but so far I think this might be one of the best fanfics I have ever read, and I have read some pretty amazing stories.

The Courtship of Jensen’s Co-Star
Author name: [ profile] qblackheart
Artist name: [ profile] switch842
Genre: RPS
Pairing: J2, Non-AU
Rating: NC-17
Word count: 112K+
Warnings: Language, Schmoop, Angst, Sex. So, par for the course for me.

Somewhere in the time between a handshake and a hug, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki went from being reel-life brothers to real-life best friends, and complete strangers to cosmic soul mates, no rhyme or reason to it that either of them could ever see. Jared was everything Jensen was not: friendly, funny, and full of life; one in six-point-whatever billion the Earth’s population currently stood at. Life was awesome. Work was amazing. Everything was fine until Jared kissed Jensen. Everything was peachy until Jensen fell in love. With desperate times unexpectedly calling for desperate measures, Jensen called Chad Michael Murray for relationship advice – because being in love led to temporary insanity obviously – so it really didn't surprise him that he couldn’t seem to win when it came to wooing Jared. Still, Pisces must’ve been in a really good place in the night sky or something because suddenly, right smack dab in the middle of the miserable courtship of his co-star, Jensen discovered that maybe loving Jared was all he needed to do to win his heart. And luckily for Jensen, loving Jared was also the one thing he did best.  PDF here
